Laura says it is a hairy so now I need to read up on Cornell's site about the difference and decide what I have at my feeders. What ever is is a beautiful little bird and a joy to watch at the feeders. Great pictures
downy woodpecker, the hairy has REALLY long beaks, about the width of the head....unless this is a bad camera angel to see the length. Downy are small, like the size of a house sparrow, and Hairy are larger like the size of a cardinal.
I, too, think it is a Downey. They are sweet little things...one of my favorites that come to our feeders. If the suet is gone, they will peck at the pole, holding the feeder:)
Thanks for all your comments! I believe it was a downy also, based upon her size and beak. It's the first time I've seen one at the feeder...I knew something was attacking the suet!

Pretty little bird, Paula, but I don't know what it is.
I think it is the female downy. I have 2 of them around my feeders. Females don't have the red on the back of their neck.

Looks like a Downy to me. Need to measure the spot on feeder where it's sitting for accurate length.
